MUDDY SEEDS

One of my careers has been
The not living up to others'
Expectations; so far along
In certain of my ways
It seemed fair to think
I could make it all the way,
But I am quick to point out

This is just coincidence, miring
Myself in the mainstream of Western
Thought, I, no doubt, coincide
At many points: Aristotle, Epictetus,
Marcus Aurelius and further along
Augustine and Calvin and Charles Hodge;
So it is only to be expected,

And this naturally gives rise
To the confusion: dressing out
An argument in verse coining
A hundred expressions seeing a world
Just beyond the one they come from.
I watch the pigeons on the ground
Eating muddy seeds and am content.
